"Mind if I interrupt you two lovebirds?" They were joined by a woman in her forties, wearing a cleaner's smock, her arms at her sides.

"Oh, Maria, are you ready to go? Would you like some? I can't eat all of this."

"No, thank you, Enna. More than anything, I want to get home to my wife."

"I understand," said Koopmann. "Are you ready to go? By the way, this is Maria Doldinger, the head of the crime lab. My new boss, Pavel Neuhof."

Pavel stood and shook the woman's hand, bowing briefly. "We spoke on the phone this morning."

"I hope you won't make a habit of this, Enna. It's no fun having to come all the way from Leer to Fleetstedt on a Friday afternoon."

"It's not my fault that we don't have a crime scene investigator here."

"Well, don't allow so many crimes to take place."

"Okay, we'll send the criminals over to you."

"That's kind of you."

Pavel was getting restless. The two women had been talking for several minutes without exchanging any information. "Have you found anything yet?" he asked.

"Fingerprints galore. Not surprising under the circumstances. A print from the motorcyclist's boot on the desk. If you bring us the boot, we'll nail him with it. The bullet was probably fired from a Jarygin PJa, caliber nine by nineteen millimeters, but I'll have to confirm that before it goes on file."

"Jarygin?" asked Enna.

"Replaced the old Makarov nine by eighteen millimeter in the Russian military in 2003. It's still relatively rare in Germany, but it has the advantage of being able to use NATO ammunition."

"How convenient. That makes it more flexible to maintain," Pavel said.

"You had a guardian angel, by the way. The Jarygin was developed because the Russians found the good old Makarov to be ineffective against bulletproof vests."

"It was the distance," Pavel said, trying to hide his shock. "The kinetic energy of a nine-millimeter bullet..."

"Yeah, I know," Doldinger interrupted. "Is that it, then?"

The head of the crime lab was putting a lot of pressure on him. He couldn't think straight. What else had he wanted to know? "Ah, signs of forced entry on the window?"

"Yes, one of the windows was forced."

"Did you compare that with the damage to the other window?"

"Judging by the repair, the other one was smashed and then forced open."

"So a different approach." It could have been Heiner last time and someone else this time.

"Or he learned from the first attempt," Enna said. "It makes a lot of noise when you break a window."

"Your colleague is right," Doldinger said.

"The letter I put on the desk..."

"I bagged it. It was from a daily newspaper."

He had already established that. "Which one?"

Doldinger sighed. "I knew you would ask that. All right, I'll find out, but give me until Monday. My weekend is sacred. And don't you dare dig up another body before then!"

Pavel narrowed his eyes. Was she serious? He was expected to wait until Monday for this important information? It had to be a joke. But he wasn't sure, so he winked at Koopmann.
